Great Shape iCARE Gives Free Eye Care

October 12, 2016

A team of 85 volunteers from the US, Canada, and Japan are now in Jamaica providing free eye care to residents of St James, Westmoreland and St Mary.

The volunteers are part of the US-based initiative, Great Shape iCARE, that has partnered with the Sandals Foundation to provide 3,000 Jamaicans with free eye exams, eye disease screening, eye surgery referrals and prescriptions.

The team is also providing reading tests, glasses as well as blood pressure and blood sugar screening.

Great Shape iCARE Director, Steven Stern, says the volunteers are pleased to eliminate the potentially high cost of eye care services for families.

Stern says over the past two years, the initiative has served over 21,000 Jamaicans.

The team is currently catering to residents in an around Savanna-la-mar, Westmoreland.

They will also provide services including cataract surgeries to patients at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay.

The Great Shape iCARE team will be in St Mary at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Port Maria St. Mary next week.
