PARIS, France — Jamaica has been elected to the Executive Board of UNESCO following a successful campaign led by the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange.

The elections took place today during the 39th General Conference of UNESCO now underway in Paris, France.

The 58-member Executive Board focuses on the development of policies and programmes to direct UNESCO’s activities.

Jamaica’s membership of the Executive Board is for the period 2017-2021.
In making Jamaica’s campaign pitch, Grange said, “Jamaica stands ready as a member of the [Executive] Board to assiduously fulfil this mandate and contribute to strengthening the work of UNESCO.

“It is our view that UNESCO carries a heavy burden of responsibility to assist in tackling various global economic and political crises and in finding solutions that will promote sustainable development for all,” she added.
