What does it take to be an amazing Dad? Importantly, money alone can’t do it. Equally important, education alone will not do it. So what is it that makes one? Today I plan on figuring out what it takes and sharing that with you.
Dad is important
You will notice that Dad is always capitalized in this article. Well, it should be. It is the recognition that there is a difference from being a father. When a man becomes a father it is a wonderful thing, but, you really don’t have to be a father to be a Dad. It might sound confusing at first but think about it. There are many people who grew up without a father in their lives for whatever reason, but they have a man that they respect, admire, and follow advice from. Those men have put in the time it took to gain all three.
Shucks, I just gave it away. On the other hand, there have been many men who are fathers and are quite wealthy, but no person in their right mind would call them Dad. The difference is the most simple, complicated trait of any man called Dad. Time!!
Time well Spent Dad
Even as an adult, the time spent with that man that you call Dad is priceless. He might be able to just spend only a few minutes, but trust me, when that time is focused on the person yearning for it, there is nothing like it in the world. Look with me, play with me, talk with me, walk with me, sit with me. All these are ingredients to being nominated. Never mind when you are a child getting this attention. The whole world can come to a standstill. Even the impact of our world standing still for a child would pale in comparison.
As we celebrate International Men’s day, I take this time out to think of all the men who have become Dad over the years. You have shaped a person into a better version of what they were before you dedicated your time. Thank you for being available, for not allowing them to go unnoticed, for being coach, mentor, teacher, standard bearer. In the words of the great Christopher Martin, “Daddy yuh a mi general!”
Please look out for the “Amazing Dads” documentary on Television Jamaica on Sun. Nov. 19 @ 3 p.m. It is promising to be special.
